Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

Germany

A residence permit to look for work in Germany, based on a recognised qualification or a points system.

  • There are two ways in. With a qualification fully recognised in Germany, the points system does not apply.
  • Otherwise the points route needs a recognised qualification: a degree, or at least two years of vocational training, recognised in the country where you obtained it (for example Pakistan).
  • The points route also needs German at level A1 or English at level B2, and at least 6 points for things like language skills, work experience, age and ties to Germany.
  • You must show you can support yourself while you look for work.
Route code: DE-BCWork

EU Blue Card (Germany)

Germany

A residence permit for university graduates with a qualifying job offer in Germany.

  • You usually need a recognised university degree. Some IT specialists can qualify through experience.
  • Your job offer must meet a minimum salary, which is updated every year.
  • Your degree may need to be checked for recognition in Germany.
Route code: DE-STUStudy

Germany student visa

Germany

For studying at a German university, including some preparatory courses.

  • You need an admission letter, or conditional admission, from a German university.
  • You usually show funds through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a scholarship.
  • Visa appointments at German missions can have long waiting times, so plan early.
Route code: SCH-CVisit

Schengen short-stay visa (type C)

Schengen area

Short visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, for tourism, family or business.

  • Apply to the country of your main destination, or of first entry if there is no main destination.
  • Travel medical insurance is required.
  • You must show your travel plans, funds and ties to home.
